How to Prepare Label Artwork for Printing
A print-ready label file is built at the final label size, has 1/8 inch (0.125") of bleed on every side, keeps all text at least 1/8 inch inside the cut line, and uses vector art or images at 300 DPI or higher. Get those four things right and your labels print sharp, cut clean, and skip the back-and-forth. Here's each step.
What Size Should My Label File Be?
Set your document to the exact finished size of the label, then add bleed. A 3 x 2 inch label becomes a 3.25 x 2.25 inch file once you add 1/8 inch on each side.
What Is Bleed, and Why Does It Matter?
Bleed is extra background that runs past the cut line. Cutters can shift slightly, so without bleed you can end up with a thin white edge. Extend every background color or image 1/8 inch past the edge of the label.
What Is the Safe Zone?
The safe zone is the area at least 1/8 inch inside the cut line. Keep text, logos, and anything important inside it so nothing gets trimmed off.
What Resolution and File Format Should I Use?
- Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF, SVG) are best, especially for die-cut shapes.
- PNG or JPG work if they are 300 DPI or higher at the final print size. A 72 DPI web image will look blurry.
- Convert text to outlines, or embed your fonts, so nothing swaps out.
- Design in CMYK when you can. Screen colors (RGB) can shift when printed.
How Do I Set Up a Custom Die-Cut Shape?
Draw the cut path as a single vector line on its own layer, in a spot color named something clear like "CutContour." Keep the shape simple. Very thin points and tight inside corners may need small adjustments, and we'll flag those during art review.
Do Clear Labels Need Anything Special?
Yes. Ink on clear BOPP is see-through unless there is white ink underneath it. If you want parts of the design to stay solid on a clear label, mark those areas for a white underprint.
What Should I Check Before I Send the File?
- File is at final size plus 1/8 inch bleed.
- Text and logos sit inside the safe zone.
- Images are 300 DPI or higher at print size.
- Fonts are outlined or embedded.
- Cut line is on its own layer (custom shapes only).
- Someone other than the designer has proofread every word.
What If My File Isn't Ready?
Upload what you have. We review every file before production and send a proof for approval. Production takes 1โ2 business days after you approve the proof. If you need artwork built or fixed, design is billed separately: logo design is a flat $35, and other design work is quoted per project.
How Do I Start My Label Order?
