Custom Label Printing Nationwide: What to Know Before You Order

Custom Label Printing Nationwide: What to Know Before You Order

To order custom labels online and get them right the first time, tell your printer what surface the label goes on, what conditions it has to survive, and its exact size and shape, then approve a proof before anything prints. At IPS Detroit, production takes 1–2 business days after proof approval, and we ship anywhere in the U.S. Here's what matters at each step.

Which Label Material Do I Need?

Where the label ends up changes what material and adhesive make sense. Labels for glass jars, cosmetic bottles, or anything that gets handled, refrigerated, or exposed to moisture need a different adhesive and material than a label meant for a dry-goods box that ships once and sits on a shelf. Tell your printer what surface the label is going on and what conditions it needs to survive — that one detail prevents most reorders.

Should I Choose a Matte or Gloss Finish?

Matte finishes read as premium and understated and resist fingerprints well. Gloss finishes make colors pop and photograph well for e-commerce listings. Beyond the basics, options like spot UV (a raised, glossy accent over specific parts of the design), foil stamping, and multi-layer embossing add a tactile, higher-end feel that stands out on a shelf or in an unboxing video.

Will My Label Colors Match When I Reorder?

If you're ordering labels for an ongoing product line, ask how color consistency is maintained across print runs. In-house printing (rather than routing your job through a broker to a different printer each time) makes it much easier to match color reliably order after order, since the same equipment, ink, and process are used every time.

Can I Order Custom Labels From a Printer in Another State?

There's no reason label printing needs to be local anymore. A well-organized online ordering process — upload artwork, confirm proof, approve production — works the same whether the shop is five minutes away or a thousand miles away. What matters is clear proofing before print and reliable packaging for the shipment itself, since labels can be sensitive to bending or moisture in transit.

What Causes Most Label Reprints?

  • Low-resolution artwork that looks fine on screen but pixelates at print size
  • Colors that shift between what's on a monitor and what prints (ask about a physical proof if color accuracy is critical)
  • Wrong adhesive for the surface (always mention if the label is going on glass, plastic, metal, or a curved surface)
  • Underestimating quantity needs — batching a slightly larger order is often more cost-efficient than reordering a small batch again soon after
